11 local fencers to compete at Asian championship in Indonesia

VOV.VN - Vietnam will field a team of 11 fencers at the 2025 Asian Senior Fencing Championships, set to take place in Bali, Indonesia from June 17 to 23.

Among the standout athletes is 35-year-old Southeast Asian champion Nguyen Tien Nhat, who previously earned a bronze medal at the 2019 Asian Fencing Championships in Japan. Also returning to the continental stage is Nguyen Phuoc Den, a bronze medalist at the 2014 Asian Games (ASIAD).

Nguyen Minh Quang, Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, and Pham Thi Thu Hoai are also among the hopefuls who will represent the Vietnamese team in both the men’s and women's individual and team categories.

“Each athlete participating in the championship has undergone specialized training in recent times, and we have also focused on key athletes to assess the skill gap between Vietnamese fencers and their international opponents,” said Nguyen Hong Dang, head of the Fencing Division at the Vietnam Sports Administration.

“Vietnamese fencing is currently preparing for major upcoming goals, including the 33rd SEA Games in 2025 and the 20th ASIAD in 2026. Therefore, every international tournament serves as a valuable opportunity for each athlete to gain real competition experience and accumulate expertise,” he added.

This year’s championship is expected to draw more than 800 fencers from 30 countries and territories, serving as a valuable opportunity for athletes to hone in their skills ahead of future international competitions.

Following the Bali event, the Vietnamese fencing team will continue their international campaign at the 2025 World Fencing Championships, scheduled for July in Georgia.
