Woman arrested for swindling money on fake foreign job promises

The Hanoi police have arrested a woman for allegedly running a foreign jobs racket targeting poor people desperate for jobs.

La Thanh Khuong, 40, opened a company last year and advertised jobs in Taiwan and Spain for a fee of US$13,000, though her business was not licensed for labor export.

The police have received complaints from dozens of victims, most of whom are from poor provinces with little knowledge of labor export policies.
Nguyen Ba Dat, a victim from the central province of Quang Binh, said he knew of Khuong via an acquaintance.
He borrowed VND65 million (US$3,000) from banks to pay her an advance and was promised he would have a job abroad within three months.
But the promise never materialzed, and Dat filed a complaint after Khuong kept delaying the refund.
Other victims also lost thousands of dollars each.
The police have not said how much Khuong collected in all from her victims.
