Whale spotted hunting off Binh Dinh coast again
VOV.VN - A big blue whale has been seen swimming off the coast of Hon Kho island in Nhon Hai commune of Binh Dinh province, central Vietnam, drawing significant attention from local residents.
Photographer Dang Van Hai, 32, from Phu Cat district, captured and shared a video on social media on June 25 showing the whale in action as it hunted for food offshore. Hai shared that he was originally photographing the seaweed season in Nhon Hai when he unexpectedly witnessed the whale surfacing and feeding.
The video shows the whale emerging from the water with its mouth wide open, surrounded by a flock of seabirds, a striking scene that quickly gained traction on Facebook and attracted thousands of views.
This is not the first sighting this year. On June 7, a local tour guide also filmed whales feeding near the coast of My An commune in Phu My district.
In recent years, whale sightings off Binh Dinh’s coast have become more frequent. In 2022 and 2023, residents in the De Gi–Vung Boi waters of Phu Cat district recorded videos of Balaenoptera edeni, commonly known as Bryde’s whales, swimming and hunting in the area.
According to the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation and Endangered Species (CBES), the presence of whales in Binh Dinh waters is a positive sign. It indicates that the marine environment in this south-central province is recovering well and can support the feeding needs of large marine mammals like whales.
