WB reviews agriculture transformation project in Hau Giang

A working group from the World Bank had a working session with leaders of the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang on April 27, aiming to examine the implementation of the Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation (VnSAT) programme in the locality.

With a total budget of over VND300 billion (US$13.5 million), the WB-funded project is being carried out in six districts, covering an area of 120,000 ha of rice cultivation.

Using advanced technology in production, the project supports local farmers in adapting to climate change and in shaping a large farm-production area that can meet export demand. It also helps improve incomes for locals through changing production methods, applying crop-converting models, and making use of agricultural waste for mushroom growing.

According to WB representatives, local authorities should focus on addressing difficulties related to investment, towards reaping sustainable benefits from the project.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Commitee Truong Canh Tuyen highlighted the significance of VnSAT for Hau Giang, saying that the local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was required to complete an action plan to effectively implement the project.

The VnSAT, part of the World Bank’s national cooperation strategy, is being implemented in five Central Highlands provinces and eight Mekong Delta localities from 2015 to 2020 with a total capital of over US$300 million, of which US$230 million comes from the WB’s preferential loans.

Its objectives are to help promote agricultural restructuring through increasing the sector’s institutional capacity, renewing sustainable cultivation methods and raising the value chain for rice production in the Mekong Delta and coffee crops in the Central Highlands.
