VOV, ABU discuss holding 57th ABU General Assembly

VOV.VN - VOV President Nguyen The Ky and the Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), Javad Mottaghi, held a meeting in Hanoi on July 27 to discuss a project to organize the 57th ABU General Assembly and related meetings in 2020.

While on a visit to the VOV headquarters in Hanoi, Mr Mottaghi was informed by Mr Ky that after accepting the ABU Secretary General’s proposal for hosting the General Assembly in 2020, VOV has implemented a project, requested permissions from ministries, and submitted a plan to the Prime Minister for his approval to hold the event. The Government agreed in principle, allowing VOV to host the 57th ABU General Assembly and related meetings in 2020.

VOV has been a member of the ABU since the Union was formed in 1964 and the national radio regards the ABU as a common house for the people working in the broadcasting sector, the top VOV leader emphasized. The national radio has received significant support from the ABU for many years, in areas such as personnel training, and integration between VOV and other ABU members and broadcasting associations in different regions around the world, Ky told the ABU official.

President Ky thanked the ABU for choosing VOV to host the event and related meetings and pledged to do his utmost to ensure a successful assembly which meets the Secretary General’s expectations.

For his part, Mottaghi said he has visited Vietnam several times over the past two decades and has seen the country go through many changes and make significant achievements in various fields. The ABU is willing to assist VOV in organizing the 57th ABU General Assembly, he said, adding that from now to 2020, the ABU hopes to receive theme and content proposals from VOV in the spirit of cooperation and experience sharing.

In recent years, the increasingly improved role of VOV in the ABU has won plaudits from international friends. VOV has successfully held a variety of important events for the ABU, such as the ABU General Assembly 2005 (co-hosting with Vietnam Television), HD-Radio 2009, as well as some regional conferences and training courses. It has actively participated in radio broadcasting contests in the region and has won several prizes, such as the jury’s special consolation prize in 2010, a special consolation prize in the broadcasting category for teenagers in 2011 and the jury’s special prize in 2017.

In addition, VOV has served on the panel of judges for prizes awarded by the ABU over many years and hosted Radio Asia 2013.

VOV reporters and editors have regularly taken part in international and regional conferences held by the ABU, which updated them on the new trends of regional and international broadcasting as well as valuable experience from regional and international colleagues and experts. The Union has also helped in inviting leading broadcasting experts to train VOV staff.
