Vietnam’s mainland to suffer up to two storms in August

In August, northern midland and lowland localities as well as the central region are predicted to suffer one or two very hot spells, while northern mountainous provinces expect heavy rains that may cause flash floods and landslides, according to the centre. 

In the southern region, south-west monsoon winds will blow at medium intensity, leading to an estimated mid-level rainfall, except for in the Central Highlands where it is forecast to see below mid-range monsoon rainfall. 

The centre also warned of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, whirlwinds and strong winds at sea. 

Specifically, the average temperature in the northern region in the first half of August is forecast to be higher than that the same time in many years, while rainfall is predicted to stay normal. 

In the second half of the month, the temperature will be lower than the average level in the same period in many years, while hot spells will hit the northern lowlands as well as the central region. Rainfall is also forecast to reduce in the Central Highlands and southern region. 

Particularly, rainfall in the northern and northern central regions will be higher than the average level in the same period in many years by 10-20%, while that in the central and southern central regions will be lower by 20 to 40%. 

The Central Highlands will see a 15-30% drop in rainfall compared to the same time in many years.
