The suspect was later identified as Lo Tho Nguyet, 21, of Chien Ly commune, Thuan Chau district, Son La province.
Once questioned at the police station, Nguyet admitted to receiving a call from a stranger who had requested that she move to Lang Son and contact the baby’s mother who was at a hostel in Cao Loc district.
After receiving the baby from his mother, Nguyet’s mission was then to illegally leave Vietnam before handing the baby to a Chinese contact in Fujian province. If successfully, Nguyet’s payment would have been VND15 million.
Once safe, local authorities took the baby boy to the province’s social support centre.
The police are continuing their investigation into the case.
