Vietnamese students shine with two golds at Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s national team won two gold medals and four silver medals at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO), ranking second overall alongside Japan and maintaining its leading position in Southeast Asia, the Ministry of Education and Training said on May 20.
The 2026 APIO was hosted by Taiwan (China), with all six Vietnamese students eligible for medals securing top prizes.
Gold medals went to Nguyen Huu Tuan and Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, both from the High School for Gifted Students, University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Vietnam’s four silver medals were awarded to students from specialized high schools in Ninh Binh, Ha Tinh, Lam Dong and Hanoi.
The 20th APIO was held from May 9 to May 10 with the participation of 37 teams from countries and territories and 1,043 contestants. Of these, 187 contestants were selected for medal consideration, including 16 gold medalists, 47 silver medalists and 93 bronze medalists.
Vietnam’s team initially consisted of 15 contestants, who sat the online exam at the University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Under APIO regulations, Vietnam was allowed to select the six highest-scoring contestants for medal consideration.
Russia finished first overall, while Vietnam shared second place with Japan. The result helped Vietnam maintain its leading position in Southeast Asia.
Based on the APIO results, the top four contestants will be selected to represent Vietnam at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).
This year’s exam was considered difficult and featured new formats, with two-thirds of the tasks requiring flexible and creative approaches. Nguyen Huu Tuan ranked sixth overall, while Nguyen Bui Duc Dung placed 11th after both secured gold medals.
At the 2025 competition, Vietnam won one gold medal, two silver medals and three bronze medals.
