Vietnamese men outnumber women by 1.38 million in six years
VOV.VN - Gender imbalance is likely to get worse in Vietnam as men are expected to outstrip women by 1.38 million in 2026, according to a projection made by the General Statistics Office (GSO).
During a seminar held in Tra Vinh province on November 13, Dr. Mai Xuan Phuong, a senior official of the Health Ministry in charge of population and family planning, said the gender imbalance in terms of births in recent years can be attributed to old-fashioned thinking, improper social security policies, and the application of medical advances in choosing the sex of a child.
Phuong went on to explain that an imbalanced ratio in terms of gender is forecast to continue to increase over the coming years, adding that relevant sectors should pay close attention in order to carry out population and family planning policies, raise public awareness about getting eradicating old-fashioned thoughts, and sex selection at birth to minimise imbalances and eliminate gender inequality.
According to a report published by the Health Department of Tra Vinh province, the gender imbalance ratio at birth in the locality has increased significantly, with the birth rate reaching 112.26 boys per 100 girls last year, with this year’s figure so far being 109.2 boys per 100 girls.
