Vietnamese market fire smoulders in Laos
VOV.VN - Fire crews were still on the scene late in the day on May 17 at a major Vietnamese market in Laos where a massive fire broke out in the wee hours of the morning.
The fire continued to smoulder throughout the 6,000 square metre facility more than 14 hours after it started. It could take several days to determine the cause and origin of the fire, officials said. |
Flames were first spotted at the Dao Huong market around 1:00 am. Fire tore through quickly, causing the roof to collapse. |
Tens of thousands of US dollars of inventory including electronics, dried food, clothes, footwear and jewellery were swallowed up by the flames. |
Fire officials said no one was injured in the fire, but many people lost their livelihoods. Many Vietnamese traders lost everything. |
"All my future is there. My retirement is there. Everything is there and now it's gone," said one Vietnamese vendor. |
Across the street from the burnt building on the afternoon of the fire vendors milled about the market area still waiting for answers from anyone as to what sparked the fire. |
