Vietnamese language seminars abroad strengthen community connections
VOV.VN - A series of seminars on teaching and preserving the Vietnamese language will take place in Taiwan (China) and the Republic of Korea (RoK) this April, aiming to connect overseas Vietnamese communities and promote a shared commitment to their mother tongue.
Organised in response to the Day for Honouring the Vietnamese Language abroad, the initiative is led by the global network for Vietnamese language and culture in collaboration with local partners. The events are designed not only to review the current state of Vietnamese language teaching and learning in different locations, but also to create a platform for educators, community organisations, parents, and learners to exchange experiences, address challenges, and propose practical solutions.
The first event is scheduled for April 11 in Taiwan, focusing on discussions about current practices and future directions for Vietnamese language education in connection with preserving Vietnamese cultural identity. Participants will share teaching methods and experiences in organising community classes, while also attending the launch of Learning Vietnamese – Book 2, a new learning resource developed to support language instruction within overseas communities.
The programme will then continue on April 12 in Gwangju (RoK), combining the opening of a Vietnamese language class with a thematic seminar. Discussions will centre on the realities of teaching and learning Vietnamese among the local Vietnamese community, alongside efforts to improve teaching methods, build effective classes, and strengthen coordination among stakeholders.
On April 14, the series will conclude in Busan with a seminar highlighting the importance of preserving the Vietnamese language and cultural identity among Vietnamese communities in southeastern Korea. The session is expected to gather input from teachers, parents, and community members, while also sharing experiences from successful models in Japan and Malaysia to help sustain and expand Vietnamese language classes locally.
Beyond dialogue and knowledge-sharing, the initiative aims to build a long-term network connecting Vietnamese language teaching efforts across regions, gradually forming a sustainable ecosystem for Vietnamese language education abroad. The introduction of new teaching materials is also expected to help standardise content and provide educators and families with practical tools suited to their needs.
Through activities in Taiwan and the RoK, the organisers hope to raise awareness of the role of the Vietnamese language, spread effective models, and promote the formation and development of Vietnamese language classes in the community. The programme seeks to strengthen a “linguistic bridge” linking overseas Vietnamese generations with their homeland, contributing to the preservation of cultural identity in an increasingly globalised world.
