Vietnamese labour market recovers to pre-COVID levels

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s labour market witnessed positive signs of recovery in the first quarter of the year, reverting to pre-COVID levels, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The country had 52.4 million people of working age (15 years old and above), equivalent to the pre-pandemic figure. Of the total, 51.3 million were employed, down 0.25% quarter on quarter but up 0.34% year on year, reported the GSO.

Businesses received new orders, expanded operations, and started major projects, leading to an increase in hiring needs, especially during the Lunar New Year festival.

In Q1, the majority of labourers worked in services at 20.5 million, accounting for 40% of the total. This was followed by industry and construction at 17 million, making up 33.1% of the overall figure; and agriculture, forestry, and fisheries at 13.8 million, equal to 26.9%.

Throughout the reviewed period, the number of unemployed people of working age stood at 1.05 million, or 2.24% of the country’s labour force. This marked a decrease of 10,300 people compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 5,400 people year on year.

According to the GSO, the average monthly income in Q1 stood at VND7.6 million, growing by VND301,000 against the previous quarter and up by VND549,000 compared to the same period last year.
