Vietnamese designs win Asian architecture awards
Two designs by Ho Chi Minh City-based company Tropical Space won awards at the Architects Regional Council Asia (Arcasia) Awards for Architecture 2018 in Tokyo recently.
Long Thanh House in Dong Nai province was given an honourable mention in the single family residential project category, while Terra Cotta Studio in Quang Nam province won gold in the category of sustainability. The two buildings used mainly brick and environmentally friendly materials.
Among the laureates, Thailand’s Junsekino Architect and Design took home both the gold medal and the Building of the Year Award among for exemplary works of architecture.
Architects from Thailand bagged six awards, while their counterparts from Singapore won one.
ARCASIA honoured brilliant young architects from the ASEAN region with several distinguished awards this year.
Architects Nguyen Hai Long and Tran Thi Ngu Ngon designed the two houses.
The Terra Cotta Studio, three storeys of workspace designed for a local potter in Dien Phuong commune, Quang Nam province, was built from baked bricks and wood. The first storey has a concrete floor. The space is also used to display the potter’s ceramic products.
The building also won the Wienerberger Brick Award for excellent brick architecture in the “Working Together” category. The ceremony was held in Vienna, Austria, in May 2018. The studio stood out as the only Asian-designed building among the predominantly European winners.
