Vietnamese architect wins 2025 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture
VOV.VN - Vietnamese architect Hoang Thuc Hao has become the first from Vietnam to receive the prestigious 2025 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture at a recent ceremony in Venice, Italy.

The award, founded in 2006 by German professor Dr. Jana Revedin and under UNESCO patronage since 2011, honours architects who advocate for innovative, humanistic, and environmentally responsible design. This year’s laureates include architects from Vietnam, Morocco, Ecuador, Germany, France, and the United States.
Hao was praised for more than two decades of work creating community-driven projects that harmonise with the natural environment and local culture, spanning regions from northern Ha Giang to the central coast of Vietnam. His architecture reflects a deep commitment to sustainability, social inclusivity, and cultural identity.
Currently a lecturer at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects, Hao is also the founder of the acclaimed 1+1>2 Architects. His work has earned around 100 architectural and cultural awards both in Vietnam and abroad.
In his acceptance speech, Hao said, "Architecture is not just about building structures, but about building people and communities. We don't create architecture for ourselves, but to connect, listen, and co-create with society."
His design philosophy blends academic insight with local knowledge, embedding natural and indigenous cultural elements into contemporary forms. More than physical buildings, his works are seen as symbols of knowledge sharing, cultural respect, and sustainable development, particularly for vulnerable communities.
