Vietnam urged to reduce salt consumption

(VOV) - On the occasion of World Heart Day (September 29), the World Health Organization (WHO) reminds Vietnamese citizens to curb salt use to prevent heart disease and stroke.

According to the National Nutrition Institute, average salt consumption for Vietnamese aged 25-64 ranges from 12-15 grams per person each day, which exceeds the five gram daily limit recommended by the WHO.

Nearly 60% of the country’s population consumes twice the WHO recommended maximum limit.

WHO warns the main cause of death in Vietnam is heart disease, which accounts for 33% of total deaths. WHO Chief Representative in Vietnam Jeffery Kobza, said the reduction of salt is one of the most effective measures to improve human health, decrease the risk of heart disease.
