Vietnam turns off 2G service from October 15
VOV.VN - The 2G mobile network was officially turned off as of October 15 across Vietnam as part of the country’s effort to accelerate national digital transformation.
Accordingly, the 2G system will duly cease operation, and 2G service subscribers will no longer use the service from October 16.
The complete switch-off is aimed at optimising the frequency reserves in a bid to develop more modern telecommunication technologies, including 4G.
To support 2G service subscribers, major national telecom service providers such as VinaPhone, Viettel, and MobiFone have implemented measures and numerous promotional programs for users transitioning from 2G to 4G nationwide.
The data compiled by the service providers indicates that there were more than 18 million 2G mobile subscriptions at the start of the year, and the figure had fallen to 771,072 as of October 10.
Representatives of the service providers, affirmed that after October 15, 2G subscribers who have not yet converted will have their devices blocked but will still be able to retain their subscription accounts.
Among them, Viettel subscribers will have two months before their accounts are locked.
