Vietnam shares prison management experience with US
VOV.VN - A Vietnamese delegation led by Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Long had a working session with the leadership of the US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in Washington DC on June 25.
At the meeting, Shane Salem, acting assistant director of the Correctional Programs Division, and other officials of other divisions of the BOP, introduced the organizational structure, functions and tasks of the bureau.
Meanwhile, Lieut. Gen. Long briefed his hosts on the management and implementation of policies towards American prisoners in Vietnam. According to the official, although the prison management agencies of the two sides have not yet carried out official cooperation activities, there is a lot of room for Vietnam and the United States to increase cooperation in this field.
In this regard, Long proposed that the US side increase the exchange of delegations to share experiences in the field of criminal judgment execution and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, including the transfer of convicted prisoners, along with running training courses to improve qualifications for Vietnamese experts and officers in the fields of criminal judgment execution, prison management, reformative education, vocational training and rehabilitation for prisoners.
He also proposed that that Vietnam and the US negotiate towards signing memorandums of understanding on specialized cooperation between the two prison management agencies to create a legal basis for practical and effective cooperation activities.
On this occasion, Lieut. Gen. Long invited Salem and other officials of BOP divisions to visit Vietnam in the near future.
