Vietnam records first death caused by monkeypox
VOV.VN - Vietnam has reported its first monkeypox death, a 29-year-old man from the Mekong Delta province of Long An, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health.
The patient was admitted to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases suffering from a fever and blisters for nine days, said Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, on October 25
He was isolated for treatment, with the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results being positive for monkeypox. In addition, he was infected with late-stage HIV/AIDS.
The patient suffered from multiple infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and severe multiple organ failure, eventually passing away after 18 days of treatment.
Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Health has set up a council in order to make assessments and report on this case.
At present, the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases is treating 20 cases of monkeypox, of which 17 men and a woman are HIV carriers.
As of October 16, the southern city has recorded 19 cases of monkeypox, along with two in Binh Duong and one in Long An.
