According to the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention, the nation’s first death is a 70 year-old male patient who was a resident of Hoi An city of the central province of Quang Nam who had been receiving treatment at Da Nang Internal Medicine – Endocrinology Hospital.

The patient had initially been taken to the Renal-Urology Department of Da Nang Hospital on July 9 where he was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and underwent hemodialysis. He had been suffering from a number of underlying health issues, such as a history of high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and pneumonia. The patient was subsequently sampled and tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on July 27.

According to Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of Department of Medical Examination and Treatment under the Ministry of Health, “The patient died after a heart attack after suffering from many underlying health issues such as high blood pressure, myocardial ischemia, end-stage renal failure, and pneumonia caused by COVID-19."

Moreover, five other provinces and cities across the country have recorded 13 additional COVID-19 cases, including seven in Quang Nam, one in Quang Ngai, two in Ho Chi Minh City, two in Hanoi, and one in Dak Lak, with all of these cases being related to the outbreak in Da Nang.

As of 10am on July 31, the nation has recorded a total of 509 COVID-19 cases, now including one fatality. These numbers have increased rapidly in recent days after the detection of a major COVID-19 outbreak in Da Nang led to an additional 80 cases being confirmed, including eight medical workers, 44 patients, 26 families of patients, and two locally-transmitted infections.
