Vietnam records another COVID-19 death, total at 59
VOV.VN - A COVID-19 patient suffering from polyarthritis has died in Bac Ninh province, a coronavirus hotspot in Vietnam, raising the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 59.
The 76-year-old patient was admitted to the Bac Ninh provincial General Hospital on May 21, with diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding and pneumonia.
The man tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus two days later. His respiratory failure did not improve, as the lung damage gradually worsened.
The patient was intubated and put on a ventilator before being transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi for intensive care.
The patient was then diagnosed with septic shock, multi-organ failure, severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to SARS-CoV-2 and polyarthritis, alongside gastrointestinal bleeding.
He was given mechanical ventilation, dialysis, a combination of broad-spectrum antibiotics and antifungal drugs, and correction of coagulation disorders among other therapies.
However, the patient responded poorly and died on June 12.
This is the 24th COVID-19 related deaths recorded in Vietnam during the fourth wave of COVID-19 pandemic and the 59th death since last year. Most of the dead patients were old and suffered from chronic diseases such as cancer, kidney failure and hepatitis.
