Vietnam readies for World Water Day 2016
VOV.VN - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has announced it has assigned the Department of Water Resources Management the task of making thorough preparations for the 2016 World Water Day celebrations.
World Water Day is an international observance said the Ministry, and it provides a great opportunity to educate the nation’s populace about water related issues and hopefully inspire them to take action to preserve the precious natural resource.
World Water Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development where an international observance for water was recommended.
The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day.
This year’s theme said the Ministry is – water and jobs – focusing on how the quantity and quality of water can change workers' lives and livelihoods – and even transform societies and economies.
The Department of Water Resources Management in turn said it will oversee the festivities celebrating World Water Day 2016 on March 21-22 in Thanh Hoa City in the northern province of Thanh Hoa.
Although a complete calendar of events is still in the works, it is expected to include a scientific seminar, art program, national meeting to mark the World Water Day and a number of campaigns aiming to raise public awareness about the important day.
