Vietnam ranks fourth in number of international students studying in Australia
VOV.VN - Vietnam finishes fourth among the leading five countries that have the most students in Australia, behind the likes of China, India, and Nepal, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Department of Education.
By the end of 2020, the overall number of Vietnamese students enrolled at educational institutions in Australia reached over 24,000, representing a decline of 2,000 students compared to 26,000 recorded in 2019.
Despite suffering a drop in student numbers, Vietnam managed to surpass Brazil to rank fourth among the leading five countries with the most students studying in Australia, only behind China, India, and Nepal.
Due to the impact of border closures in an effort to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the total number of international students enrolled at educational institutions in Australia fell by 9% last year to 686,104 in comparison to the year prior.
However, this figure does not include international students who are studying online outside Australia.
Dang Thuy Chi, first secretary in charge of education at the Vietnam Embassy in Australia, said thousands of Vietnamese students have since returned to their home country but are still continuing to study online and wait for opportunities to return to Australia.
Several students have since enrolled in domestic international educational institutions, such as RMIT University or joint education schemes held between Vietnamese and international universities.
Although Australia has successfully contained the COVID-19 pandemic and launched its own an immunization campaign, the Australian Government has yet to decide on when to reopen borders and welcome back international students.
At present, it has prioritised the repatriation of tens of thousands of its own citizens from abroad at quarantine facilities.
