Vietnam police arrest fugitive after eight years of hiding in Laos

VOV.VN - Police in central Nghe An province have arrested a particularly dangerous fugitive after eight years on the run in Laos under a false identity.

Va Giong Va, 60, was arrested on March 24 in a joint operation led by Nghe An police’s drug crime investigation unit, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and police in Laos’ Bolikhamsai province.

Va, from Huoi Tu commune, Nghe An province, had been wanted since November 22, 2018 on charges related to drug trafficking and organising illegal drug use.

According to investigators, the suspect cut off contact with his family, changed his identity, and lived in a remote area in Laos to evade capture.

Following a period of surveillance and intelligence gathering, Vietnamese police established a special task force and worked closely with Lao counterparts to locate and arrest him.

The suspect has been transferred back to Vietnam for further legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
