Vietnam pledges action on gender equality, ending violence against women
VOV.VN - The nation has pledged action on promoting gender equality and eliminating violence against women, as speakers at a United Nations event said major barriers remain despite progress.
On March 31 (local time), at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the Vietnamese Mission, together with the missions of Sweden and Uruguay, RISE, and the Spotlight Initiative, co-hosted the event “Women Breaking Barriers,” marking the conclusion of Women’s Month at the UN.
The event drew wide attention and participation from representatives of UN member states, youth, and the public interested in gender equality issues. Speaking via a recorded message, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said that despite progress, no country has achieved full gender equality, while gender-based violence remains one of the major barriers, directly affecting the health, education and development opportunities of women and girls.
Ambassadors and heads of mission of Sweden, Uruguay and the European Union also shared experience and initiatives to advance women’s rights, increase women’s participation in leadership positions, and underlined the need to sustain gains achieved in the face of current challenges.
As a key speaker at the event, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said that “breaking barriers” is not limited to symbolic achievements, but more important y requires equal opportunities for women and girls in all circumstances. He said Vietnamese women have played a core and leading role, from national defence to socio-economic development, and shared Vietnam’s notable progress in promoting gender equality and protecting and supporting victims of gender-based violence.
He said advancing gender equality is a shared responsibility of society as a whole, requiring the participation of both men and women through sustained, concrete actions to build a safe, fair and enabling environment for women and girls.
Through remarks by speakers who are successful and influential women in science, technology, media, sports and the arts, the event highlighted the role, potential and contributions of women across all fields.
It also reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, helping promote
and empower women and girls worldwide.
