Vietnam marks World No Tobacco Day 2019 with ceremony

VOV.VN - The Ministry of Health heldp a meeting in Ly Thai To Statue Square on May 26 to launch a series of events for the upcoming World No Tobacco Day 2019, which will take place on May 31.

Hundreds of volunteers took part in the annual event, which aims to highlight the dangers of smoking.
Upon addressing the ceremony, Nguyen Viet Tien, Deputy Minister of Health, said that activities to raise awareness of the harm caused by tobacco have begun to be implemented nationwide. Most notably a smoking ban which has been enforced in many workplaces.
World No Tobacco Day, which is observed each year on May 31, is intended to encourage a 24-hour break period from all forms of tobacco consumption. The Ministry of Health has launched Vietnam National No Tobacco Week between May 25 and May 31 to raise awareness of the link between tobacco and lung diseases.
Tobacco consumption considerably increases the chances of users getting a preventable lung disease, which is a major killer each year.
Passive smoking can also pollute the lung of children, harming their lungs and causing health problems for them when they reach adulthood.
Football stars Doan Van Hau, Nguyen Quang Hai, and Bui Tien Dung (L-R) have been named as ambassadors for Vietnam National No Tobacco Week. They call on smokers to kick their habit in order to improve, not only their own health, but the health of their relatives and the wider community.
Delegates joined in a parade along with hundreds of volunteers around Ho Guom, also known as Sword Lake, in response to World No Tobacco Day 2019.
