Vietnam, Laos hold joint anti-drug drill on shared border

VOV.VN - The Border Guard Command of Vietnam’s central province of Quang Tri, in coordination with the Military Command and the Security Department of Laos' Khammuane province, conducted a joint counter-narcotics exercise on September 15 in the Cha Lo border area to counter armed cross-border drug trafficking.

At the drill, Vietnamese representatives stressed that the exercise serves as a vivid testament to the special solidarity, traditional friendship, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.

Officials noted that while both nations maintain effective intelligence-sharing and joint patrols, transnational drug trafficking remains complex. Syndicate networks frequently exploit rugged terrain and remote border trails, and stand ready to use firearms against law enforcement when intercepted.

According to the exercise scenario, the Quang Tri provincial Border Guard Command uncovered a professional transnational drug ring led by a foreign national, with accomplices from both Vietnam and Laos.

The network smuggled narcotics from the Golden Triangle to gathering points along the Lao provinces of Khammuane, Savannakhet, Salavan, and Bolikhamxay before attempting to traffic them into Vietnam for transit to third countries.

Spanning three phases with six training modules, the exercise demonstrated the command, coordination, and operational capabilities of the two countries' border forces in handling armed cross-border drug crimes. The drill successfully met its objectives while ensuring absolute safety for personnel and equipment.

Following the exercise, the Vietnam Border Guard Command and the People's Committee of Quang Tri province presented merit certificates to outstanding collectives and individuals.

Similar awards were granted by the Lao Border Guard Command and the Khammuane provincial administration. On this occasion, the Quang Tri People's Committee also provided VND1 billion (US$40,000) to the Khammuane Military Command to procure equipment and support tools.
