Talented students, teachers and observers are taking part in the sixth ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APT JSO-6) which is underway in Vietnam for the first time with the theme “Renewable Energy For Life”.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Quoc Khanh said this year’s theme “Renewable Energy for Life” demonstrates that the development of renewable energy is essential to ensure energy security, protect the environment, cope with climate change and improve public health.
It is among the ASEAN Plus Three for the Gifted in Science (ACGS)’s annual event to encourage and nurture gifted students in the field of science and technology, he added.
The event attracts about 180 students, teachers and observers from ten ASEAN countries and its three partner countries, and Sweden.
It also provides the students with a chance to participate in competitions in physics, chemistry, and biology; and conduct research and cultivate creativity via poster presentations and lab skills assessment while the teachers will share experience in education for the gifted in science and attend a workshop on promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) for students through applications of renewable energy.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency, the Southeast Asia’s energy demand will grow by more than 80 percent by 2035. Therefore, deploying renewable energy is strategically significant to deal with the region’s power shortage.
