Vietnam desires broader media cooperation with Australia

VOV.VN - Voice of Vietnam (VOV) President Nguyen The Ky and  Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Craig Chittick have jointly expressed their desires to foster ties between the two nations and between VOV and Australian media agencies, to expand information sharing and cultural exchanges and mutual understanding.

At a reception for the Australian ambassador in Hanoi on February 8, VOV President Nguyen The Ky emphasized the significance of his guest's visit at a time when both nations are celebrating the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He spoke highly of the current status of bilateral relations and showed his support for Australia’s position and role in the Asia-Pacific region.

He thanked Australia for its assistance to Vietnam on aspects of the economy, education, culture, and communications. Mr Ky told the diplomat that he appreciated the country’s stance on East Sea issues and maritime freedom to ensure that it is a peaceful co-operation area without escalating tensions in the region. He voiced support for the early upgrading of bilateral relations from that of a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership.

Regarding VOV's role and operational structure, Ky said VOV was one of the media agencies in Vietnam to be established earliest since September, 1945. VOV now has eight national radio channels, including VOV5 that broadcasts 12 programs in foreign languages. There are also television channels, print and online newspapers. With its resources of more than 3,100 staff and modern facilities, VOV is readily prepared to cooperate with Australia in the areas of culture and communications, he said.

He hoped that the Australian embassy in Vietnam will serve as a bridge to further collaboration between both sides and provide additional assistance for VOV to open its new bureau in Australia in March.

Ambassador Chittick congratulated VOV on the new bureau it will soon open in his country.

He indicated that 2018 will witness robust development in bilateral ties as the two countries celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations. They share many similar stances on world issues and national interests, and both hold cooperation and development opportunities. He praised VOV’s role in disseminating information to raise people’s awareness regarding the positive level of bilateral ties.

The Ambassador hailed the VOV president’s proposal to broaden communications cooperation and exchanges of visits, reporters, and journalists, committing to deliver the proposal to Australian press agencies and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

He said he hopes that bilateral relations will reach new heights this year, leading to ever brighter prospects and bringing benefits to both countries, the region, and the world.
