Vietnam - China passenger train service up and running after five-year hiatus

VOV.VN - Vietnam Railways welcomed the first international passengers on board a train from Nanning Station (China) to Gia Lam Station (Hanoi) on May 25 evening, marking the resumption of the cross-border passenger train service between the two countries after a five-year COVID-inflicted hiatus.

With the service back in operation, two trains - MR1 and MR2 - will run daily in both directions. The MR1 train departs from Gia Lam Station at 9:20 P.M. and arrives in Nanning at 10:06 A.M. the next morning. In the reverse direction, the MR2 train leaves Nanning at 6:05 P.M. and arrives in Hanoi at 5:30 A.M. the following day.

Immigration procedures for passengers are handled at Dong Dang Station in Vietnam’s Lang Son province and Pingxiang Station in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Significantly, from May 27, direct trains will also operate between Hanoi’s Gia Lam Station and Beijing West Station. These trains will depart every Tuesday and Friday at 9:20 P.M., and arrive in Beijing on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.

Ticket prices for a one-way trip are approximately VND1 million for the Hanoi–Nanning route and VND9.37 million for the Hanoi–Beijing route. Children under four travel for free, while those aged four to 12 enjoy a 50% discount. Groups of six or more passengers receive a 25% discount.
