Vietnam - China passenger train service resumes after 5-year hiatus

VOV.VN - After a 5-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the international passenger train service between Vietnam and China will officially resume operations starting May 25, 2025.

Accordingly, there will be two daily trains, MR1 and MR2, operating between Gia Lam Station (Hanoi, Vietnam) and Nanning Station (China) in both directions.

MR1 is scheduled to depart from Gia Lam Station at 9:20 PM and arrive at Nanning Station at 10:06 AM the following day. Meanwhile, MR2 is set to depart from Nanning Station at 6:05 PM and arrive at Gia Lam Station at 5:30 AM the next day.

Border control procedures for immigration and customs will be conducted at Dong Dang Railway Station in Vietnam’s Lang Son province) and Pingxiang Railway Station in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region.

Notably, starting May 27, the two countries’ railway sectors will also operate direct trains between Gia Lam Railway Station (Hanoi) and Beijing West Railway Station (China). These trains will depart from Gia Lam at 9:20 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays and arrive at Beijing West Railway Station on Thursdays and Sundays, respectively.

Passengers can also purchase tickets to continue traveling by rail to a third country from international railway stations within China.

To prepare for the resumption of the international rail service, Vietnam Railways has collaborated with relevant authorities including border security, customs, and health departments, and held bilateral meetings with the authorities of Pingxiang (China) to coordinate immigration and customs procedures for passengers. Facilities and train stations have been refurbished and railway lines have been upgraded as well.

The operation of international passenger trains between Vietnam and China is based on the Vietnam - China border railway agreement signed in 1992. Before the COVID-19 outbreak, Vietnam Railways and China Railways operated daily trains between Hanoi and Nanning.

The two countries’ railway sectors expect a strong increase in passenger volume following the service resumption, fueled by the growing popularity of rail tourism among locals and international travelers.
