Vietnam-Cambodia dedicate refurbished friendship statue

The unveiling of the statue and independence monument was timed to coincide with the 38th anniversary of the victory over the Pol Pot genocidal regime, said officials of the Cambodian government.

At the ceremony, the officials expressed their sincere appreciation to Vietnam for its assistance defeating the enemy and overthrowing the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, bringing revival and development for Cambodia.

The statue and monument symbolize the eternal friendship and solidarity between Cambodia and Vietnam, they averred.

The sculpture was originally erected in Kompong Chhang in 1989 to mark the 10th anniversary of the victory over the Pol Pot genocidal regime. In 2016, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee donated US$350,000 to the province of Kompong Chhnang to refurbish the monuments.
