Vietnam attends Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities in India
VOV.VN - The Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities (GITC) competition kicked off in New Delhi, India on November 9, drawing nearly 300 students, 120 of them being adolescents with disabilities from 24 nations across the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam.

The event aims to narrow down the digital gap among youths from different nations through improving information technology (IT) skills and offering opportunities to disabled adolescents as well as getting them involved in social activities.
The ceremony was opened by an address from the President of the Korean Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (KSRPD) Kim In Kyu, who underlined the importance of IT equipment in helping adolescents connect with the world and urged them to take full advantage of available technologies to overcome difficulties in future.
As an annual event in the Asia-Pacific region, GITC has been held in the Republic of Korea, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
A seminar on IT forum will be organized during the 3-day event as representatives from various nations will make presentations on their achievements and efforts to help disabled people to gain access to IT equipment.
From the report delivered at the seminar, the representative from Vietnam’s Information and Communications Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong said, Vietnam has 7 million people with disabilities, accounting for 7.8% of the country’s total population. It has placed importance on issues related to disabled people and signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and issued the Law on Persons with Disabilities in 2010.
Vietnam has channeled great efforts to refine laws and policies to further promote the rights of people with disabilities and continually investing into their welfare.
