Vietnam among countries with highest cancer rates globally

VOV.VN - Vietnam is among the top countries with the highest cancer rate worldwide, according to a recent International Scientific Conference on Cancer Prevention in Hanoi.

Statistics unveiled at the event indicate that the country ranks second among in terms of the highest cancer rates in the world, recording over 200,000 new cases each year, with the number of fatalities reaching up to 82,000.

The cancer fatality rate in the nation stands at 73.5%, while the global rate and that of developed countries is 59.7% and 49.4%, respectively.

Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Khoa, former deputy director of Bach Mai Hospital, attributed this situation to population growth, an aging population, greater participation in cancer screening, and the development of science and technology in order to swiftly detect cancer cases.

Furthermore, the increase in the number of cancer cases is attributable to water and air pollution, along with unhealthy lifestyles like smoking, drinking alcohol, and using consuming food which is high in calories.

Dr. Khoa therefore underscored the importance of advanced technologies as part of the early diagnosis of cancer, adding that the country has almost all of the leading radiology and nuclear medicine equipment in the world in order to help detect cancer early.
