The centre's warehouse will have the capacity to deal with 200,000 tonnes of goods per year and the off-airport cargo terminal capacity of 100,000 goods per year. The project is predicted to cost USD82.9m.
Pham Viet Hung, deputy head of the national flag carrier’s Investment and Procurement Department said Mekong Delta was the country's agricultural hub with a huge demand for air freight services and there were many valuable export goods.
In 2017, total cargo transported via Tan Son Nhat Airport in HCM City reached 70,000 tonnes. The number of exported vegetables and fruits grew 20% a year from 2015 to 2017 period.
He went on to say that since Can Tho is the centre of Mekong Delta region, it has direct transport routes to HCM City as well as other provinces. A logistic centre in Can Tho will help boost logistic service in the whole region, ease the overloading at Tan Son Nhat Airport and prevent a similar problem at Long Thanh Airport.
"The air logistics centre must be located inside or connected with the airport as well as other means of transport," Hung said.
The project will be divided into three phases from 2019 to 2024. The centre will cover 27 hectares and located right outside of Can Tho Airport.
Truong Hoai Nam, vice chairman of Can Tho City said after the investment promotion meeting was held, many investors expressed interest in the city. Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways also want to invest in logistics services in Can Tho.
