US veterans hand over records of martyrs’ remains in Quang Tri

The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) on January 30 handed over records related to remains of Vietnamese soldiers who laid down their lives in 1971 at Khe Gio bridge in Cam Thanh commune, Cam Lo district, the central province of Quang Tri.

The records, which were presented to the provincial war veterans’ association, match with the soldiers whose remains were discovered in the province’s Cam Thanh commune in 2006. The remains were reburied in Road 9 National Martyrs Cemetery.

The same day, the VVA delegation visited the 241 Tan Lam Quang Tri military base and the place where the remains of the soldiers were unearthed. The delegation also paid homage to Vietnam’s fallen soldiers in the Road 9 National Martyrs Cemetery.

Since 1994, the VVA has launched a programme called “Veteran Initiative” to find missing US soldiers in wartime and provide information about battles related to Vietnam’s soldiers. The programme has provided information about around 12,000 Vietnamese fallen and missing soldiers, thus helping Vietnam repatriate remains of 1,500 soldiers.

The programme also raised more than US$20,000 to build a clinic in central Da Nang city’s Hoa Vang district and funded various cultural and educational activities.
