US grants additional US$2 million to flood victims

VOV.VN - The United States is providing an additional US$2 million in humanitarian assistance to respond to Typhoon Molave and the ongoing severe flooding that has affected central Vietnam since early October.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the announcement during his meetings with Vietnamese officials in Hanoi on October 30.

This amount brings the total humanitarian assistance from the US Government for people touched by the floods to US$2.1 million.

Two weeks ago, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) announced US$100,000 in disaster relief to help Vietnam address the immediate humanitarian needs of vulnerable communities in areas most affected by tropical storm Linfa.

According to a media release by the US Embassy in Vietnam, USAID is ramping up efforts to meet emergency needs in communities affected by Vietnam’s historic typhoon season.

This assistance builds on USAID’s long-term investments in Vietnam to reduce the risk and impact of disasters, the embassy said in the media release.

At least four tropical storms hit Vietnam in October, causing severe flooding in the central region. Flashfloods and landslides have so far left 230 people dead and dozens missing.
