Typhoon Ma-on grows in strength as it enters East Sea

VOV.VN - A tropical depression located to the east of the Philippines’ Luzon Island has strengthened into typhoon Ma-on and is set to enter the East Sea in the next 48 hours, according to details given by the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Forecasters said at 13:00 p.m. on August 22 that the storm's centre was located at roughly 16.3 degrees north latitude and 123.8 degrees east longitude, with the strongest sustained winds close to its eye reaching between 62km and 74km per hour.

Over the course of the next 48 hours, the storm is anticipated to travel in the northwest direction at speeds of between 15km and 20km per hour, with the weather event set to get stronger as it enters the East Sea.

Due to the impact of the storm, as of August 23 there will be stronger winds and rough seas in the East Sea area, with waves hitting between 4.0 metres and 6.0 metres.

Over the next 72 hours to 96 hours, the storm is anticipated to track northwest, traveling at a speed of between 20km and 25km per hour before gradually weakening.

In order to deal with the current situation, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has requested that coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Quang Ngai strictly monitor the storm’s development and notify all vessels operating at sea to proactively seek shelter from the incoming storm.

Furthermore, localities have been requested to devise appropriate production plans in a bid to ensure the safety of local people and property, while making thorough preparations for possible flash floods and landslides in the aftermath of the weather pattern.
