Two Vietnam nationals missing in Korean boat fire

(VOV) - Rescue efforts are continuing for two Vietnamese citizens missing since a 29-tonne fishing vessel erupted into flames and sank on December 30, some 5 nautical miles northeast of the Dokdo islets.

The fishing vessel, christened the Munseong, caught fire with 10 fishermen on board including two Vietnamese citizens off the Republic of Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo at 5.13am, according to the Vietnam Embassy in the RoK.

Six crewmen including the captain were rescued, but two of them died soon thereafter, reports Munseong Fisheries Co., the owner of the ship. The remaining four - two Koreans and two Vietnamese – went missing.

The two Vietnamese are Nguyen Van Chuc (born in 1977 in Ky Phu, Ky An district, Ha Tinh province) and Vo Van Huu (born in 1992 in Ly Trach, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province).

Korean Coast Guard vessels, aircraft and private fishing boats are searching for the missing four.

The Vietnam Embassy is keeping in close contact with Korean agencies to deal with events as they unfold.
