Turin City to tighten ties with Vietnam

Italy’s Piemonte region wishes to tighten ties with Vietnam, Turin City Mayor Piero Fassino told Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy, Nguyen Hoang Long on July 10.

Mayor Fassino recalled the fine relationship between the Piemonte region and Vietnam, especially during the past struggle for national independence. He said he had visited Vietnam a few times when he was Minister of Justice.

He said Turin wants to further promote cooperation with Vietnam in economics, culture, and education and actively coordinate with Vietnam in organizing all activities to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2013.

It will host a “Vietnam Week in Turin” in September 2013, an art performance during the Turin-Milan Festival, an exhibition on Vietnam’s land and people at some museums in Turin and a trade and investment promotion programme.

Ambassador Long thanked the Fassino and Turin people’s for supporting Vietnam in the past struggle for national independence as well as in the process of national development.

Turin is a capital city of the Piemonte region which is home to giant Italian economic groups, such as Intesa SanPaolo and Fiat.

As one of leading cities in Italy, Turin has built a Vietnam research centre and conducted teaching programmes on Vietnamese culture.
