Truck-train collision disrupts rail traffic in northern Vietnam

A container truck collided with a train when its driver was crossing a rail track linking Hanoi and the northern city of Hai Phong on January 8 night.

The crash, which happened in Hai Duong Province, left both drivers seriously injured and disrupted services on the 102-kilometer line.

It sent the train's locomotive and another car about one meter off the track, and the truck which was carrying a 40-feet container 20 meters away.

All the passengers on the train, bound for Hai Phong, escaped unscathed.

The Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities scrambled to clear the site, trying to resume rail services on Saturday.

Witnesses said the truck driver, identified as 38-year-old Vu Van Thang, disregarded warnings.

The case is being investigated.
