Traffic accidents continue to decrease

Traffic accidents in the first three months of this year decreased by 14.8% year-on-year to 4,985 cases, announced the National Committee on Traffic Safety on March 23.

In the period from December 16, 2015 to March 15, traffic accidents claimed 2,193 lives and injured 4,522 people, down 6.48% and 17.6%, respectively.

From February 16 to March 15, 603 people were killed and 1,155 others wounded in 1,367 traffic accidents nationwide.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of accidents dropped by 377, or 21.6%, while the fatalities decreased by 175, or nearly 22.5%, and the injuries declined by 571, or 33%.

According to the committee, the country has witnessed remarkable decreases in the number of traffic accidents, facilities and injuries from 2012 to 2014.

In 2015, the number of traffic accidents, injuries and deaths dropped 51%, 60% and 24%, respectively, compared with four years earlier.

Vietnam aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents by between 5-10% this year, lower the number of serious traffic accidents on railways and inland waterways, and ease traffic congestion in big cities, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
