Tien Giang spends nearly VND504 billion on disaster prevention

The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang allocated nearly VND504 billion (US$21.72 million) for disaster prevention in 2018 to ensure production and people’s livelihoods for stable local socio-economic development.

The sum was mainly provided for flooded areas and Dong Thap Muoi in the province’s western area and Go Cong in the eastern coast.

From loans of the Asian Development Bank and reciprocal capital of the Vietnamese Government, Tien Giang has implemented two sub-projects of improving systems preventing saline intrusion in Go Cong and mitigating risks in Ba Ray - Phu An in the Tien river’s upper area with total investment worth VND112 billion this year.

In addition, the province poured more than VND236.8 billion into constructing 17 irrigation works to prevent flood and saline intrusion, as well as protect lives in disadvantaged region in tandem with transport development and the building of new-style rural areas.

Especially, to help local residents reform production and expand suitable economic models, Tien Giang also spent over VND40 billion on 167 rural irrigation constructions measuring more than 158,000m in length, and strengthen 46 temporary sewers and dykes, along with arranging training courses on search and rescue for local people.

As a result, the western region of the province has suffered fewer impacts of natural disasters this year. Only more than 9,300 ha of rice in the autumn-winter crop in eastern districts was damaged by typhoon Usagi in November, but there is no loss caused by drought and saline intrusion.
