Thuong Phuoc – Kaoh Roka int’l border gate pair opens
VOV.VN - The administrations of Dong Thap province (Vietnam) and Prey Veng province (Cambodia) jointly inaugurated the Thuong Phuoc - Kaoh Roka International Land and Waterway Border Gate pair on January 17.
The opening of the pair marks a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation, helping to promote trade, transportation, and economic development in the border region.
The border gate pair integrates the management of both land and waterway routes, that is expected to facilitate import and export activities. Statistics show total trade turnover between Dong Thap and Prey Veng exceeded US$1.4 billion from 2022 to 2024, with the Thuong Phuoc - Kaoh Roka border gate pair accounting for a substantial share.
The land route from these border gates to Phnom Penh takes only about 60 minutes that enables swift connections to major cities in Cambodia and Thailand, and also supports the development of international tourism across ASEAN countries.
The upgrade of the border gate pair will also enhance infrastructure, improve the livelihoods of border communities, and strengthen community-based tourism initiatives in Dong Thap.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu highlighted the positive development of the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia over the years, bringing practical benefits to the people of the two countries and actively contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in the region.
The two sides have organized and managed the construction of a peaceful border on the basis of international law and practice, in accordance with their long-standing friendship.
The opening of the border gate pair will help synchronize import and export activities via both land and waterway routes, and take a step forward in realizing the planning of border gates along the entire Vietnam - Cambodia border, significantly contributing to the implementation of the planning of the Mekong Delta region and the planning of Dong Thap province for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, stressed Vu, who is also Chairman of the National Border Committee.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Dong Thap People’s Committee Pham Thien Nghia highlighted this as a landmark moment that not only bolsters cooperation but also creates a breakthrough in trade and socio-economic development.
The inauguration helps enhance border control capabilities, ensure efficient management of import-export activities and address cross-border issues, he said.
