Three killed after landslide at Thanh Hoa stone quarry

VOV.VN - Three workers have been confirmed dead following a serious landslide at a stone quarry in Thanh Hoa province, after rescue teams recovered the remaining two bodies from the debris on the morning of May 21.

The accident occurred at a quarry operated by Anh Tuan Co., Ltd. in Cam Tu commune on May 20.

According to local authorities, three workers from Lao Cai were extracting stone near the foot of a mountain when a large volume of rock and soil suddenly collapsed from above, burying them beneath the debris.

One worker died on the way to hospital shortly after the incident, while the other two were initially reported missing. Rescue forces worked throughout the night and found both bodies on May 21.

Immediately after the accident, police, military personnel, medical teams, and local authorities mobilised rescue workers, excavators, and specialised equipment to access the site and launch emergency operations.

However, rescue efforts were hampered by steep terrain, the massive volume of collapsed rock and soil, and the continued risk of additional landslides in the area. Rescue teams had to combine heavy machinery with manual search methods to ensure operational safety.

On May 20, Cao Van Cuong, vice chairman ò the Thanh Hoa provincial administration arrived directly at the scene to oversee rescue efforts and instructed agencies to mobilise maximum personnel and equipment to search for the victims as quickly as possible.

Authorities in Thanh Hoa also issued an urgent directive assigning provincial police to investigate the cause of the accident and strictly handle any violations by organisations or individuals if wrongdoing is identified.

Officials further ordered a comprehensive inspection of mining activities, labour safety compliance, and environmental protection measures at the quarry operated by Anh Tuan Co., Ltd. in an effort to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The company has been instructed to fully cooperate with authorities, support the victims’ families, and review all mining procedures and workplace safety conditions at the quarry.
