Thousands in distress in flood-hit areas

Thousands of local people in Quang Phu and Xuan Chau communes of Thanh Hoa province have been still isolated four days after the Cau Chay River burst its embankment, causing widespread flooding.

Torrential rains on September 7 caused water levels of the Cau Chay River to rise very quickly overnight and break part of its embankment.

The violent floodwaters immediately submerged more than 1,500 households and hundreds of hectares of rice, sugarcane, cassava, and other subsidiary crops in the two communes.

Many elderly people say they have never seen such severe floods since 1975.

The flooding left nearly 3,600 people in distress, and they are in dire need of daily necessities, especially food, clothing, mosquito-nets, and blankets.

Organisations and businesses in Thanh Hoa and other provinces have been sending emergency relief, including instant noodles, blankets, mosquito-nets, and school aid, to flood-affected residents.

Water levels of the Cau Chay River are currently receding, and local police, soldiers and militiamen are supporting the residents with clean-up efforts.

Provincial leaders touring the flood-hit area

There is growing concern that infectious diseases could break out at any time as dead animal bodies are being decomposed and the water supply system has been contaminated.

The provincial administration has sent leaders and experts to the locality to examine the situation and encourage clean-up efforts.
