Thailand to host the 2nd World Irrigation Forum

Over 1,000 people from all over the world, comprising ministers, senior officials, ambassadors, academics, and members of the public will participate in the Second World Irrigation Forum (WIF2), to be hosted by Thailand from 6 to 12 November 2016.

Organized by the Thai National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage, WIF2 will focus on the theme "Water Management in a Changing World: Role of Irrigation in Sustainable Food Production.”

It will take place at the International Convention and Exhibition Center Commemorating His Majesty’s 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary in Chiang Mai province, and will be held along with the 67th International Executive Council Meeting.

Before the Cabinet meeting on 13 September 2016, Prime Minister General Prayut Cha-o-cha presented an award to the winner of the slogan contest for WIF2 at Government House.

The winner is Mrs. Supaporn Thongpook, member of the Ping River Basin Committee, Chiang Mai. The winning slogan is "Smart Irrigation for Food Security: ZERO Hunger.”

In addition to the award presentation ceremony, the Royal Irrigation Department is also organizing an exhibition, under the concept "Thailand 4.0 toward Smart Irrigation for Food Security: Zero Hunger,” in order to publicize the upcoming WIF2 and the 67th International Executive Council Meeting.

The exhibition features sustainable water resource management in the next 20 years, with three major missions, based on royal advice on water resource management, Thailand 4.0 policy toward water strategies, and international cooperation.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister thanked all relevant agencies, saying that they should seek ways to tackle water resource problems in an integrated manner and on a sustainable basis. He also urged all Thais to be aware of the importance of "water resources,” as every drop of water is precious.
