Thailand ranked 44th on Global Innovation Index 2018

Thailand has moved up seven places in the Global Innovation Index 2018 rankings, now standing at number 44.

In his national televised address, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha commended the government’s technology and innovation policy, citing it as the main factor behind Thailand’s ranking in this year’s Global Innovation Index.

Released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the index provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 126 countries which represent 90.8% of the world’s population and 96.3% of global GDP. Its 80 indicators explore a broad vision of innovation, including the political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.

Last year, Thailand was at number 51, he noted, pointing out that Thailand is moving in the right direction in terms of technological development.

The premier said Thailand has always been known to have high capacity in creative and high-tech products as well as petty patents or minor innovations.

Through innovations and technological advances, Gen Prayut believes Thailand will be able to play its role in the world community for decades to come.
