Thailand joins int’l community to achieve prohibition of nuclear weapons

Thailand recently joined a non-governmental organization, known as the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, or ICAN, as well as other organizations in pushing for success in the negotiations concerning the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

In his national address on 10 November 2017, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha spoke about Thailand’s important role in working with the international community to solve various global issues and ease its aviation problem.

For instance, on 20 September this year, Thailand joined 50 other countries in signing and presenting the Instrument of Ratification to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at a ceremony, held at the United Nations in New York.

The treaty prohibits the development, testing, production, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use, and threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as assistance and encouragement to the prohibited activities. Thailand is proud to be among the first countries to deposit the Instrument of Ratification to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The Prime Minister said that ICAN had recently been awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its role in achieving the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. He said that Thailand was honored to have been part of the campaign to abolish nuclear weapons.

The Prime Minister said that another of Thailand’s successes was that the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) had recently removed a red flag against Thailand over safety concerns. As a result of the removal of the red flag status, Thailand’s tourism business would experience higher growth and the aviation sector would expand and contribute to the country’s economy.
