Tet celebrations held for Vietnamese expats in US, Romania, and Slovakia

VOV.VN - Overseas Vietnamese around the world are celebrating the Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet, at gatherings held in their host countries as Vietnam’s biggest traditional festival nears.

The Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN and the Vietnamese Consulate General in New York co-hosted a gathering on January 27, attracting 500 participants and many overseas Vietnamese through a virtual platform.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, noted that the UN General Assembly recognised the Lunar New Year as a UN holiday from 2024, demonstrating the international community's respect for Asian culture.

He assured that the two Vietnamese offices in New York would continue supporting Vietnamese expats and connecting them with others in nearby areas.

Participants also sampled traditional Tet dishes and enjoyed art performances put on by Vietnamese artists, students, and members of the Association of Vietnamese diplomatic representatives’ spouses in New York.

Meanwhile, as many as 300 overseas Vietnamese took part in the “Xuân Quê hương 2024” (Homeland spring) programme in Romania to welcome the arrival of the year of the dragon according to the lunar calendar.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Romania Do Duc Thanh stressed that the January 2024 visit to Romania by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh helped to further deepen the traditional friendship and multi-faceted cooperation between the two countries.

Participants at the event were given the chance to experience folk games and enjoy the traditional Vietnamese cuisine, as well as musical performances put on by artists of the two countries.

Most recently, many overseas Vietnamese in Slovakia gathered together at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Embassy in Bratislava to ring in Tet.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Slovakia Nguyen Tuan extended his best wishes to the Vietnamese community living and working in the Eastern European country on the occasion of the Lunar New Year.

On August 25, 2023, the Vietnamese community was recognised as the 14th ethnic minority group of the host country.

The diplomat therefore urged them to uphold the tradition of solidarity, promote the cultural identity of Vietnam, and actively contribute to the relationship between the two countries.
