Technical update on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis
VOV.VN - HIV experts and policy leaders on March 10 gathered at a technical meeting on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a promising bio-mediacal HIV prevention tool in Hanoi.
The meeting was hosted by the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) and the global health organization PATH, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
Currently it is approved for use as an HIV prevention measure in the US, Canada, France, Thailand, Brazil and other countries, and it has also been successfully piloted in many low and middle income countries.
Stakeholders attending the meeting considered and discussed the future of PrEP in Vietnam and possible models for service delivery. Although Vietnam has made remarkable progress in reducing HIV prevalence, key populations continue to face substantial risk of HIV infection, including MSM, transgender women, people who inject drugs, and HIV negative partners of those living with HIV.
Representatives of key at risk populations at the meeting noted the significant and growing interest in PrEP among these communities in Vietnam, an indicated that it would be a welcomed addition to the current HIV prevention tools available in Vietnam.
